Periodontitis

Things to know before your visit

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen or lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis is common but largely preventable. It’s usually the result of poor oral hygiene.

After your oral exam, our staff will determine whether or not you have periodontitis. Our staff will measure the pockets in your teeth to see if there are any abnormal depths. If you have periodontitis, a thorough cleaning will be done with scaling and root planning. Sometimes restoring dentistry will be required and in more sever cases surgery.

Be sure to let your dentist know of any pain or discomfort you are experiencing. Note that periodontitis can be avoided with proper oral care at home. Follow your dentist’s guidelines to the best of your ability to avoid developing this condition.
